August 2015

Did some of you who didn't go to the NY RWA conference get to watch the streaming awards?  It brought back great memories of being there in that same room a few years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it until they lost the streaming images for a short time.  Unfortunately what we lost was the live feed of our own Kimberly Buckner winning the Golden Heart for Contemporary Romance.  Way to go, Kimberly!

We'll get to hear all about it, the conference and some of the latest industry news at our August meeting on Saturday the 15th.
We'll look forward to seeing you there,

March 2015

I know we have several new and returning members and I'd like to extend a BIG HODRW welcome to you all. A few of you have attended the last meeting or two, but we'd still love top have you chime in with who you are and where you're at on your writing path as well as what kind of writing you're focused on right now.
We have some outstanding programs coming up in the next few months, so everyone mark your calendars now! This month we have the fabulous Pam McCutcheon speaking to us on Writing a great synopsis.  Trust me, no one knows this better than Pam who has written a  book on the subject.   Plan to be there next week at 10:00 am at the Englewood Public Library.
In April we will be having New York Times best-selling author Joan Johnston.  That is a not-to-be-missed workshop on great beginnings and fabulous endings.
Then in May is the annual all day workshop we share with CRW (Colorado Romance Writers).  Registration has just opened and seating is limited so reserve your place soon.
On a different note, don't forget our upcoming contests.  The Aspen Gold is our contest for published authors, and the Molly is our highly respected contest for unpublished writers.  We will continue to give you all more information on both.
Heart of Denver also has several other ongoing events for our members.  About once a month we hold the Book-In-A-Week challenge for everyone wanting to kick start their writing or challenge themselves on any writing issue they are dealing with
from editing to, plotting, to finishing a book.  Becky Martinez will clue us all in when the next one will be coming up.
We also hold a brainstorming session about every other month that all members are welcome to attend.  They are a great way to get help with a plot, a title, a scene, or characters, anything that has you stuck or uncertain what to do next.
I hope to see you all this coming Saturday and, again, new members please feel free to let us know who you are.

From the Desk of the President – December 2014

I can’t believe the year is almost over. It seems to have flown by in the blink of an eye.

The October mini-conference was a big success. Everyone who could make it had a good time. Congratulations to all of our Aspen Gold and Molly winners and finalists. It was very nice to see some of you at the conference.

Plans for our anthology are proceeding nicely. There is a deadline of December 15 to commit to writing a story of 2,000-5,000 words, so work quickly.

The board for next year has been elected and will take office in January.

We don’t have a regular meeting in December, but we will have a pot-luck party on December 14. See the email loop for details. Hope to see you all there.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of the President – October 2014

The time has come for our October mini-conference. Be sure to register and to sign up for a pitch session with one of our three editor/agents. We will also announce the winners of our Molly and Aspen Gold contests, so be sure to come and cheer on the finalists!

We will take our conference speakers to dinner on Friday night. Come join us if you can. It is a great opportunity to talk to new people in a relaxed and informal setting.

It’s also time to vote for next year’s officers. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to run next year! Ballots will be emailed to members, and we will also have some on hand at the conference.

Information about the anthology is posted in the forum. Start working on your 5,000 word story.

Several events are in the planning stage for next year. Stay tuned for further developments, and talk to a board member if you would like to volunteer to help out with anything. We need people to run our contests – The Molly and Aspen Gold, next year. Having several people work on a project makes it much easier.

The brain-storming sessions have been a big hit, so I think we should continue to have them. Talk to Grace or Mary if you would like to host a session. Bring a specific question or get help planning the entire story.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of The President – June, 2014

Our June meeting will be with Deb Parker at the Englewood Library off of Hampden Avenue.

Don’t forget the new location. There is no meeting in July. We will also be at the Englewood Library for
the August meeting. In September we’ll return to the Virginia Village Library.

The contests are up and running. Let Janet Baltz know if you can be a reader for the Aspen Gold, or Grace Larralde know if you could judge a couple of entries for the Molly. All help is greatly appreciated.

A few people in the group would like to get together and have a brain-storming kind of session. Let me know if you would be interested. Maybe we can find a coffee shop or something and get some creative juices flowing.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of The President – May, 2014

Another month down. I can’t believe how fast the time is flying by.

You have until May 30 to enter the Molly! Polish up your first 25 pages, including any prologue, and up to a 5 page synopsis! If you published a book in 2013, then enter the Aspen Gold. We take e- books, and this year we added a short story category. Check the website for details.

Remember that our June meeting will be at the Englewood Library off of Hampden to talk with Deb Parker about the library system. There is no meeting in July because of RWA Nationals (have fun everyone who gets to go!) If you can’t go to RWA National, then check the recordings out of our chapter library. We have them from meetings for several years.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of The President – April, 2014

Happy Spring! In spite of all of the chances of snow I keep hearing about, I’m finally seeing signs that the world is waking up and ready for some warm weather. It feels like it has been forever and I, for one, am really looking forward to it. Spring means that contest season is here, too.

Polish up your first 25 pages, including any prolog ue, and up to a 5 page synopsis and enter The Molly this year. Deadline is May30 and you can ente r on-line! If you published a book in 2013, then enter the Aspen Gold. We take e-books, and this yea r we added a short story category. Check the website for details.

We’d also like to start a new project. Vicki would like to put everyone’s photo along with a brief bio in the newsletter, and I think it would be nice to add this to the website as well. We have severa l members that live outside of Denver, and this would be a nice way to help learn everyone.

We’ll see everyone at the Virginia Village library on April 19. Our speaker will be Bruce Ducker, a multi-published local author, retired lawyer and al l around good guy. He prefers to ‘go with the flow’ so there isn’t a specific topic. Feel free to ask ques tions about contracts, writing life or just about a nything else that comes to mind. Becky Martinez will be bac k in May to give the presentation that got interrupted in March. In June we will switch to the Englewood Library off of Hampden to talk with Deb Parker to gain some insight on how the library syst em works. There is no meeting in July because of RWA Nationals (have fun everyone who gets to go!) a nd in August we are still planning for a social gathering, along with getting highlights from the c onference. All in all it’s shaping up to be an exci ting year again.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of The President – March, 2014

We’re finally starting to see signs that winter might end. The ice in the fishpond has melted enough that the fish are actually visible. It’s been a couple of months since that was the case. The snow seems easier to take when it melts the next day.

Becky Martinez will be our presenter for March, and will talk about plotting a mystery. In addition she will raffle off a month of mentoring (must be present to win) as well as a basket of goodies. It looks to be a lot of fun.

Since the Virginia Village library is unavailable for the summer months, we’d like to consider having a social event in August instead of a normal meeting. Any ideas are more than welcome. The after meeting lunches are always wonderful opportunities to sit and chat with people you don’t see very often. Stay tuned for future developments.

The Molly and Aspen Gold will begin to accept entries in April. Please contact Janet Baltz if you are able to help with the Aspen Gold, or Kathy Matzen if you can help with the Molly. If we can get a couple of people to do one or two categories it is not too difficult.

Our Book In A Week loop is active again. It’s a great way to set a reasonable goal and announce it to people so you have a bit of ‘inspiration’ to get it done. It’s kind of like arranging to meet a friend at the gym. Even if you don’t really want to go work out, someone is expecting you, so you make more of an effort. Contact Maggi if you want to join us.

Thank you to everyone who makes this group work so well. You might not always hear the thanks, but your efforts are appreciated.

We’ll see everyone at the Virginia Village library on March 15.

Enjoy the writing!

From the Desk of The President – February, 2014

There seems to be a lot of interest in doing an anthology, and we have volunteers to keep it moving along. We are looking at stories of di?erent lengths from very short to up to 12,000 words. Our theme is Potporri. Stay tuned for further details as they become available.[livicon name="notebook" htmltag="span" size="32" color="#990000" hovercolor="#003699" animate="true" loop="false" eventtype="hover" onparent="false" duration="1400" iteration="4" styles="height:48px;"]

You should receive the updated by-laws on the email loop, along with a brief summary of the changes provided by RWA. As a chapter, we need to decide if we are going to approve them, so please read over them and we will accept your votes. I’d like to get most votes at the meeting, but we will have email voting available as well. The changes mainly deal with the number/titles of board members, term limits for holding offices, and some changes to the treasurer’s position, as well as an increased emphasis on pursuing a career in romance writing.

We will have a representative from a local start-up company, Beneath the Ink, to speak at our February meeting. They have an easy way to add information to an ebook using technology that isn’t an app. You can add text, audio, maps, recipes, graphic images or other things that readers can explore at their leisure to add to the novel-reading experience. This will be a hands-on experience that should be entertaining. You can get a pre vie w at their website: www.beneaththeink.com.

We’ll see everyone at the Virginia Village library on February 15. Stay warm.

Happy New Year!

It’s nice to see everyone back again, as we look forward to fun things to come in the upcoming year.

At our last meeting we decided to pursue a group book. We have an editor who has already volunteered, and it would be helpful to have someone in ‘charge’ to make sure that the project continues to move along. Any volunteers?

It’s also time to think about volunteering to run the Molly and Aspen Gold contests. And to prepare your own entries. The deadline is May 30 – it’s never too early to start.

We’ll see everyone at the Virginia Village library on Jan 18. Stay warm.

Enjoy the writing!
